Robert: just a quick note. Wanted to get some feedback from you. Is SSL all it can be to IMS? We have made some customer service improve-ments and wanted to make sure that you are just as satisfied as you have always been, if not more so. Hope you are well.

Motoring Down to "America's Finest City" - San Diego...

lunch in la jolla, california...

Last week I was finally able to get down to San Diego to see Ablecargo.com. Doug White and I have been trying to get out for lunch for the longest time, but due to various episodes, we kept missing each other. It was Tuesday, April 24th, and the day was glorious - the picture above was the view from our table in the restaurant at Georges At the Cove in La Jolla, California. Doug's business is primarily moving automobiles worldwide, and it appears that this sector of the business still seems to be thriving, although competition is as fierce as ever. Sea Shipping Line has some very attractive full container load rates for automobiles and we would be very happy to quote for you and more importantly book for you. The restaurant was fantastic and these types of scenes reinforce the positive perks of my job.

The San Diego international transportation community is relatively new to my portfolio - that is within the last decade - and I have grown very fond of the bi-yearly visits. Now that I have GPS, the biggest obstacle of doing sales in San Diego county has been nullified. The area is spread out from South Orange County to Temecula to the Mexican Border and navigating from account to account can be a daunting task. Having GPS in my Android phone makes it a snap - although the battery life is always a worry (grateful for Starbucks). The San Diego forwarders are as good as anywhere, and we do value their support.

The other major moving commodity coming from this area is household goods and personal effects. The trick here is that many of the removal companies specialize in working directly with the United States military. This cargo usually requires US Flag vessels. But...those companies that work for large corporations that move their people around the world, this type of cargo is our forte and we are happy to oblige. Always happy to quote and book for you.

To everyone who took a moment to share Sea Shipping Line with me, thank you so much. As always we are grateful for your consistent and loyal patronage.

Every single booking is important to us. Here's why - our numbers show that our average booking size is now 2.61 teus. A teu is a twenty-foot equivalent unit, so a forty-foot container would be two (2) teus. So doing the math, our average booking is between 2-3 teus. The logic is conclusive and we are grateful for each and every account that graces us with their support. We especially cherish bookings that have multiple containers. Always willing to negotiate, approach us first and last.

The Further Examination of Our Website...

As indicated in our February Newsletter, we will utilize this second section of our monthly newsletters to dissect, page-by-page, our new website. Our vision of the ultimate website was that it would be elegant in its look and feel, simple in its execution, and sophisticated in its value to our clients. We did away with traditional menu driven navigation and gave it more of an iPad type experience, without the tap capability of course. The entire site is designed to get what you need in no more than two clicks. Let's get on with it...

By clicking on the Trade Tools Icon (top-right) on our homepage at seashipping.com you will be hyperlinked to our trade tools widget. This tool allows the user to use internet based websites to get mundane industry activities done quickly. As is with most of the site, the page is divided into four distinct sections. The top is a gorgeous, calm, ocean graphic with our logo floating over the water. This is the signature graphic for our entire web experience.

The second area on the immediate left serves as a navigation/directions bar. Two mini-icons are situated at the top to take the user either back to the homepage or offer the user the opportunity to link to our scheduling page (more on this page in a future Sea Shipper newsletter). Directly beneath these is a key to explain the micro-mini icon red info icon... and its value. Lastly there are links to the three biggest transportation portals - INTTRA, GT Nexus & CargoSmart.

The third section of the trade tool is an alphabetical listing of links for many industry related websites. By hovering your mouse over the micro-mini icon, you will get a pop-up explaining what exactly that link will do for you. Some sites are just industry news, some are tools to get things done, some are charts with various bits of information - there is a lot of data here, and using on-lines tools are just faster - as long as your internet connection is good that is.

By clicking on any of these links, your action will open a new browser window or tab and that particular tool will open. Take care of business - close the website - done. If there is a tool you would like included, click on the American Flag colors at the bottom of the page and send me an email. I would be happy to investigate and add the link. Then you can bookmark this page for future use and all your tools will be in one place.

The fourth area is the grey gutter at the bottom of all our pages which contains text driven navigation links, a link to our C-TPAT certificate (thanks to Sergey Goodkovsky of Nature's Sungrown Foods for pointing out that the graphic was sideways - this has been corrected), a mailto link - to send a message to the site designer (just click on the American Flag colors), our West Coast corporate address, our phone number, our SVI number, our SCAC code, and our OTI license numbers.

It really is quite unique in its simplicity. Click on the picture to the left and feel free to mouse around.

'Key Moment' for Regulating NVOs, Forwarders

The U.S. Federal Maritime Commission will take steps to begin the process of modernizing regulations for non-vessel operating common carrier and ocean freight forwarder licensing, registration, and proof of financial responsibility...stay tuned for more of this late breaking news.

SSL Seattle Chows Down...

Darin Kessinger, our Seattle office General Manager, has advised that Chris Chow is now under the employment of Sea Shipping Line performing all customer service related duties. Chris gave us a short blurb as to what he is made of...

"I’m a 4th generation Seattleite. As my dad worked abroad when I was younger, I had the benefit of travelling a lot while I was growing up. I have travelled the globe a couple times and I had a chance to work/live in Italy for a year. I have been in the transportation bizness for over 15 years. I am fluent in Italian, have studied French and Mandarin Chinese (of which I would like to re-start my studies), and would like to learn Russian some time down the road. I am an avid film-buff, preach baseball as a way of life and through cooking am on my life-long quest for the Perfect Taco."

The perfect taco?, I too am on that quest. I do not believe it exists but life is more about the journey isn't it? Welcome to Sea Shipping Line Chris, your multi-language capabilities should be a huge + for SSL. We will have to do some film trivia on my next trip to the PNW.

SSL Red Bank Re-Hires Past Employee...

We are pleased to announce that, as of April 23rd, Cristine Howell has joined SSL Red Bank in our Customer Service Division. Those of you who have been with us for several years might remember Cristine (Algarotti) who worked with SSL from 2000 – 2003. Since then, she has spent time working with another NVO both in California and New Jersey. We are pleased that she has re-joined our organization and are sure that you will do all you can to assist her. Thank you.

Hiking for Truth and Perfection in An Imperfect World...

My good friend of many, many years, Honorato Soto, (at least that is what he is calling himself lately as he goes by many names), sent over a few pictures from his recent trek around Japan. I loved the pictures and the cause so much, that I asked him if I could include it in our newsletter. After much coercion, Honorato, a happy employee of Marushin Group, came through with the below short story in his own words with a little bit of editing on my part...

pondering the meaning of it all...

Written by Honorato Soto: "When my long time customer and friend, Toshi, in Japan asked me if I would like to go to Shikoku Island for hiking, I figured it would be just another workout and I agreed. By the 3rd day of our trek, I was totally mesmerized by this spiritual path, a pilgrimage to the 88 Sacred Places of Shikoku. We ended up hiking a total of 1,039.5 miles, climbing Mount Koya-san (2,800 Ft), Mount Ishizuchi-san (6,503 Ft), and finally legging it over to Tengu-dake, a 8681 Ft mountain on the border of Chino and Koumi of Nagano, Japan. This mountain is the highest mountain of the Northern Yatsugatake Volcanic Group, which has been celebrated as a Holy Land where numerous deities have lived since mythological times. Each time I have gone to Japan on a business trip since, we hiked rain or snow from 7 in the morning till late in the evening. This pilgrimage was started by one person in the year 839. Being Informed is a Dual Responsibility...

touring the organic farm...

It is your responsibility to ask questions and educate yourself so you have the tools to make enlightened decisions. It's the responsibility of educators, educational systems and government organizations to make quality information available to all. The values of accountability, transparency, openness, and responsiveness are immeasurable. We need this free flow of information in order to evolve intelligently. If you have this, you are truly blessed.

Recently, I had the opportunity along with a very close friend to tour another organic farm. This particular farm specializes in oranges and avocados and we got to pick as many as we could carry. It was interesting to hear what the actual owners of the farm had to say about the course of organic farming. So much is going on with our food production right now that it is hard to fathom what exactly is going into our bodies.

I order a box of organic food from the farm operators on a bi-weekly basis. The company is called Farm Fresh to You and you can check out their website by clicking on the graphic to the left - that is a shot I took with my phone of the side of their delivery van. The picture above was a shot of the farm which is on a hillside outside of Ventura, CA. The farmers claim they deliver 17,000 boxes of organic food to door in Northern California and about 7000 boxes to Southern California. They continue to grow literally. At an average price of $31.50 per box per week - this folks is a $39+ million dollar a year business and that is just with the box deliveries. No wonder I have been thinking of taking up farming lately.

It is our job at Sea Shipping Line to make you as intelligent as you can be about moving full container loads for your clients from point A to point B - the cost, the routing, the transit time, and any other factors that affect getting a sale. Your success is our success and we are well aware of that. Putting information in front of you gives transparency to the transaction and we would be foolish not to be open, accountable and responsive. These are truly the keys to success in all facets of life. "Successful people ask better questions, and as a result, they get better answers" (Julie Whitman Kline - editor HealthKeepers magazine).

thanks for thinking sea shipping line...grateful for breath and movement everyday...
